Lake Bunyonyi Medical Centre
The Medical Centre's Journey
In 2023, construction of the Medical Centre on the shores of Lake Bunyonyi began.
There was no health facility for the 5000 households who live nearby. The lake is remote and challenging to access by road and many people in the community are unable to receive the medical attention they need. Illnesses go untreated due to the cost and distance to access hospitals.
The medical centre is currently in the finishing stages with support from several fundraising activities and generous donations. It will open its doors in the summer of 2024 to provide access to affordable, high quality healthcare for the local community around Lake Bunyonyi.
We hope to also provide the centre with a specially equipped 'boat ambulance' for health staff visiting the islands, and for transporting sick patients and pregnant women in need of urgent care. Boats are vital as they are the only means of transport around the lake, and the road only reaches one side of Lake Bunyonyi.
